Novice Dog Scent Detection Workshop

This offering is currently on hiatus.

Scent work promotes a positive, trusting relationship between owner and dog. It is a partnership sport where both team members (human and dog) must help one another perform an efficient and clean search. This type of training also promotes confidence in the dog and provides intense mental stimulation.

Dogs and their handlers will be introduced to novice level container search nosework. This is a fun and versatile version of scent detection that can be played at home and in competition.

Working within the guidelines of the SDDA (Sporting Detection Dog Association), this class will focus on training your dog to locate a hidden target scent* and alert you to its location.

Classes are run so that each search is done by one dog and handler team at a time, so dogs with attention issues can focus and learn. Working individually without social stressors also enables the dog to successfully channel its energy and leaves the dog and handler free to concentrate.

Graduates of the class will be eligible to train toward the completion of a wintergreen DOT (Designated Odour Test). A home scent training kit is included in the cost of the course.

*Wintergreen scent in containers is used for novice class searches.
